Our dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens eat A LOT.
All animals are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped, fecal tested, dewormed heartworm tested (for dogs) or FeLV/TIV tested (for cats), and current on flea/tick/heartworm prevention.
We take in animals from all over the region so their health and vaccination histories are typically not known or, unfortunately, nonexistent. Every time we save an animal by bringing them into Judy's Forgotten Jewells, it is a risk because there is always the possibility that we may be bringing disease in with the animal. We now have an isolation space to best handle any Parvo puppies coming into the building!
The Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody treatment targets the disease directly with one dose, helps decrease the burden of supportive care, and resolves symptoms like vomiting and lethargy faster than previous treatment plans. We are so excited about the availability of this new treatment and want to make sure we have sufficient stock in our isolation space because we know Parvo will come into the facility even despite all the precautions we take.
Along with spaying or neutering every adoptable animal, we frequently need to perform dental procedures or address an animal's injury with a surgical solution, which could mean removing a diseased eye or amputating a leg beyond repair.
Heartworm-positive dogs are a sad reality in our region. We treat every positive dog in our care, which is quite a financial undertaking.
Shelter life can be boring so we want to make sure we have a variety of toys and enrichment activities to keep our animals occupied while they wait for their forever family.
